Day 303 Celebration

Today I got to celebrate the 90th birthday of my friend April's Granny -- that's Ms. Helen to rest of us. She had a fine time entertaining friends and family and she and April were sweet enough to pose for me. I'm so glad I could join the party. Here's to a life well-lived and a wonderful legacy!

Day 301 Peek-a-boo

Since this cardinal had his back to me I was waiting for him to turn around so I could get a picture. I don't know if he was sneaking a peek because he knew I was there, of if he just had an itch.

Day 299 Family

Today is my brother's birthday so this picture is for him. Happy birthday, George. It's a good day to  appreciate family. I'm thankful for mine today and am thinking of friends trying to cope with the loss of one of theirs.

Day 298 I'll Take It

This is one of those humbling days when the quality of the picture I'm posting is really not very good even though the scene was beautiful. But I got to enjoy that beautiful scene, and a relaxing evening with a friend, instead of "focusing" on photo quality. I'll take that deal.

Day 297 Monarch

The Monarchs are here. Everywhere. They really should be called flutterbys.

Day 294 Thanks, Sarah

Thanks to my friend Sarah, I found this door. It's just standing there. The property owner came by while I was shooting and I asked if he minded. He said no. I didn't ask him why the door was there. I'd rather we all get to decide for ourselves; make up our own story. For Sarah and for all of us, I like to think it's a reminder of all the opportunities, all the good things in front of us, on the other side of the next door. I think sometimes finding the door is the hardest part. Thanks, Sarah. I'm so happy you found it.

Day 293 Hot Now

This is a really good place to get out and stretch your legs after a long drive. I do recommend getting out because it seems like sitting in the parking lot with a camera lens sticking out the window makes some people a little uncomfortable.

Day 292 Main Attraction

The beautiful sunset was the main attraction at the beach this evening. Everybody on the beach was just standing, watching in amazement at the beauty of the sky. I wish I could have done a better job of capturing it.

Day 291 Blues Legend

What a showman Buddy Guy is! He put on a great concert in Mobile tonight. Thanks, April, it was a blast!

I've had a great birthday. Thank you to all of you who spent time with me or sent good wishes.

Day 288 S.J.

It's hard to beat a smiling baby when you're looking for a picture for the day! Lucky for me, S.J. came to visit and was a very happy model.

Day 285 Picturesque

Foley's Railroad Museum holds an amazing and picturesque display amid a quarter of a mile of "O" gauge railroad track. Gary and Jo, pictured here as one of the trains goes by, were getting their own shots of the drive-in movie which was showing a feature film.

Day 284 Blacksmith

I got to see a demonstration by the blacksmith at Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island today. What a master craftsman and interpreter! One of the other people there described him as being almost poetic in his descriptions of the life and work of a blacksmith during the heyday of the fort. Here, he's showing off the "horse on a shoe" he made while talking with us.

Day 282 Red Belly?

I saw this Red-Bellied Woodpecker on the Backcountry Trail this morning. I'm not sure what his belly looks like, but he seems like a Red-Headed Woodpecker to me. Apparently some bird with a redder head got that name first. Anyway, the trail was great this morning. I also saw a fox, a huge owl, lots of little critters and all sorts of people out enjoying the morning.

Day 281 Osprey

I saw this Osprey while on a boat trip on the delta this morning. Great trip courtesy of Five Rivers Delta Safaris as part of the Alabama Coastal Birdfest.

Day 279 St. Francis

The Feast of St. Francis was this week. I wouldn't even have known that if not for my Facebook friends posting quotes. It's funny though, that I did think of him before I read the quotes that day because I was in a class where "seek first to understand" was attributed to Stephen Covey. Yes, I know, it's Habit #5. I guess great philosophies, like great songs, sometimes reach a bigger audience when they're re-released by someone new. Here's another of St. Francis' lesser known quotes that got my attention: "Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received -- only what you have given."

Day 277 Thank You

I'm very lucky. Even on a day when it's late and I have no picture, no ideas for a picture and lots of other things I should be doing. Armed only with a point-and-shoot camera, I can take 10 minutes and go to the beach. I might not always come away with the best of photos, but I sure come away with a better attitude and a pile of gratitude. I've heard from some friends lately that my daily pictures have become a regular, and positive, part of their day. Imagine what the project is doing for me! Not only do I get to take the time to look around me every day and appreciate what I see, I get the support of great friends. I don't tell you all enough: Thank you.

Day 276 Change in the Weather

The cool weather this morning inspired me to pass up the sandals and flip flops and put on my boots for a change. Then, the fact that I forgot to take the camera with me when I left the house today inspired me to take a picture of my boots when I got home.

Day 274 Playwright

My niece Annalese wrote and directed a play for her 4-H group to perform tonight. Panda-monium! What's Black, White & Gone? was great! Congratulations to Annalese, Savannah and the entire group of very impressive young people who hosted a wonderful dinner theater tonight.
